Symbols contain no footprint or 3D model data themselves, but they can contain links to connect them to a specific footprint file or 3D model file on your computer. They are, however, really useful - you can make a full 3D model of the board, check for fit in your enclosure via CAD or 3D print, and create a nice 3D illustration to document it. Footprints are organized into libraries by placing them in folders with names customarily ending with ".pretty." Footprints tell KiCad where on the board to place pads, holes, and other features.ģD models have nothing to do with the electronic design they will never have any influence on the manufacturing files you send to your boardhouse. kicad_pcb file contains a single footprint. Footprints are designated in footprint(.kicad_pcb) files. lib file contains an arbitrary number of symbols.įootprints translate the schematic into 2D layout elements. Symbols are designated in library (.lib) files. They don't define anything about the size or shape of the component - only the number of connections it has and what they do. They describe the electrical connections between circuit elements, and nothing else. Symbols are the building block of the electrical schematic. It sounds like you're stuck on step one, trying to add 3D elements when you're supposed to be adding Symbols to your schematic. The proper process is to create an electrical schematic, import that into the layout editor, and (optionally) add 3D elements. I think you might not understand the workflow for ECAD.
